Nanoscience can be divided into two categories: ‘soft’ nano and ‘hard’ nano.  ‘Soft’ nano generally has to do with biological structures and processes and has applications in medical and pharmaceutical industries.  'Hard' nano has to do with essentially all non-biological types of structures and processes and has corresponding applications in advanced electronics, data storage, sensor technologies, ‘green’ energy and communications industries.

The nanoscience research of NQPI encompasses both types, with strong efforts in hard nano and many on-going and currently developing cross-campus collaborations.

The Ohio University NanoBioTechnology Initiative is also concerned with soft nano.
